Ask specifically

“God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can’t if you don’t pray, and He can’t if you don’t dream. In short, He can’t if you don’t believe.”                  Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

Recently I have felt the importance of requesting of God specifically the things that we feel we need or want. Too often I am too general. I have felt that God hears and LISTENS to our every effort to really communicate with Him. But He ANSWERS according to our faith, and intensity of wanting, our specificity, and His wisdom of what would be best for us. And our specificity in asking.

Asking specifically increases the likelihood of receiving what we are asking for. It also makes it easier to recognize and say thank you for what we receive. Praying specifically for things that others needs (compared to just our own needs) seems to increase God’s willingness to respond. And it can be more fun or more satisfying to help good things happen in other people’s lives, than our own.

  1. In Mormon 8:37, Moroni says to the people of our day that “Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing.” I have wondered what qualified him for such incredible revelation. I concluded that in response to the authenticity and intensity of his desire to persuade all men to come unto Christ, and in response to his sincere prayers to do so, he was given that revelation to enabled him to not only minister to the people of his generation but those our day as well. If my observations are somewhat truthful, it would further support Brother Mortenson’s statement that, “[Our heavenly Father] ANSWERS according to our faith, and intensity of wanting.” In response to Moroni’s faith and intensity of desire to persuade all men to come unto Christ, his prays were answered with a marvelous comprehensive understanding of the people of our day. That understanding most likely helped him compose a more perfect message to share with us now in the Book of Mormon.
I admire and love prophets like Moroni, and our living prophet Russell M. Nelson who so authentically want the most important things. I know that if we want to unify our desires with God’s and learn to love and want the same things that he does, he will help us change our very desires and we will become even as He is. It may seem strange to want to share unity of feeling with God, yet, I know that there is no other greater Joy than to share those feelings.
